As caregivers we face many challenges. Obviously the physical strain can take its toll on backs and shoulders but the emotional strain can have far more damaging effects. At times the overwhelming feelings of guilt and helplessness can start to wear us down.
Our initial reaction may be to drop everything and throw ourselves, head first, into caring. Nice thought but that is the first step to burn-out – TAKING ON MORE THAN WE CAN HANDLE. The first thing to do is analyze what exactly is needed. How long will the care be needed? How much can we actually do to help? What are the resources available to us locally?
Set Reasonable Goals
Take one day at a time. On a daily basis, take care of the most important things first. You will have a sense of accomplishment even if you don’t get to everything on your to-do list. Take advantage of time management systems and calendars to help coordinate the extra work. Look for solutions instead of problems and this will keep your care giving positive.
Take Care of Yourself
You will be better able to handle the frustrations of care giving if you get regular exercise, eat well and sleep well. Take a break when you need it even if just for a few minutes. Set aside time for yourself each day. Relax, maintain your sense of humor.
Enlist Helpers
You can’t do all the caring alone, as noble as it may seem. Involve others in the care giving. Keep in touch with family and friends and others in the community and let them know what is needed. You can also find support groups online as valuable resources.
Whatever you do, don’t be hard on yourself. Being a caregiver is not easy, but it can be extremely rewarding. Remember, there truly is more happiness in giving than there is in receiving. Keep a positive attitude and reach out for help and you will be able to cope.
