Ways to Avoid Caregiver Burn-Out

As caregivers we face many challenges. Obviously the physical strain can take its toll on backs and shoulders but the emotional strain can have far more damaging effects. At times the overwhelming feelings of guilt and helplessness can start to wear us down.

Our initial reaction may be to drop everything and throw ourselves, head first, into caring. Nice thought but that is the first step to burn-out – TAKING ON MORE THAN WE CAN HANDLE.

The first thing to do is analyze what exactly is needed. How long will the care be needed? How much can we actually do to help? What are the resources available to us locally?
