The Need for Caregiver Organization

The need for organization is important in various areas of our lives. To get to work on time, to reach a goal or to get ANYTHING done we have to be somewhat organized. However, when someone you love is sick or injured you can instantly become thrust into the role of caregiver whether you know it or not. How do you even begin to organize care giving?

What is there to organize, you might ask? Everything! From bringing them home to taking them back for doctor’s visits can be exhausting. Nowadays since most people prefer to recuperate at home, tending to a recovering person can take a huge toll on non-professional, caring family members.

But where do you start? What is the first thing that you should do? Shouldn’t caring just come naturally?

Where do You Start?

At the beginning, of course. Sounds simple but you need to know exactly what you are dealing with. How long will the recovery period be? What level of care is needed? What financial options are available to you? Who can you get to help? What resources are available to you in your community?

Once you have answered these questions keep a list handy of emergency numbers and family and friends where you can get to them in an instant.

Next, be safety conscious. If you are moving special equipment into a home be sure it will fit with enough room for caregivers to maneuver and not hurt themselves.

Use a calendar to record doctor’s appointments and helper arrangements. Don’t try to rely on your own memory, there are too many things to keep track of. Always write it down.

Lastly, turn to others for support. Family and friends are more than happy to assist. Be specific in your requests and they will be able to relieve you of much stress. Also, there are support groups in every community or on the Internet that can be valuable resources.

Caring for someone we love does come naturally but sudden illness can cause a lot of stress. Keep a positive attitude and an open heart and you will face this care giving challenge successfully.
